Myopia Management
Myopia, or short-sightedness, causes distant objects to be blurry. At Wendy Diddams Optometrists, we provide myopia management to help control and reduce the progression of myopia.
Understanding myopia
Myopia, or short-sightedness, occurs when the eyeball grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This results in difficulty seeing distant objects clearly. While myopia often begins in childhood, it can progress rapidly if not managed properly.
Around 1 in 3 people in the UK are affected by myopia.
In the UK, the prevalence of myopia in children aged between 10-16 years old has more than doubled over the last 50 years.
By 2050 it is estimated that 50% of the worlds population will be short-sighted, a fifth of whom will be at high risk of sight-threatening conditions as a result.
